Info for Visiting Pilots
General info
The take off is on PJK Paragliding Istra club leased land and so to speak private.

The take off is just below the old city walls with restaurants and there are usually many people watching. The take off is steep and narrow, although big enough to lay out two gliders next to each other. Only one can launch at the time. Please make sure you do not fly too close to buildings and people. Avoid flying directly over buildings and keep flying in front of the old town rather than above. Due to great public exposure pilots are asked to fly conservatively.
Take off ethics: Pilots are asked to set up on the side of launch (use the shade under trees) and only walk on launch area ready to launch, strapped to the harness with the glider connected. |
Landing
Landing is next to the bridge over river Mirna down in the valley.
The wind is channeled through the valley and the landing direction is almost always parallel to the river. Beware of the proximity of the road, the bridge, and the river! If you are uncertain whether you can SAFELY land on the narrow strip between the road and the river, land across the road. If the field across the road has crops on it land on the dirt road parallel to the main road. |
Access
In tourist season cars are charged a daily parking fee down at the bottom of Motovun. There is shuttle bus service from the bottom parking to the start of old town going up and down every 10 minutes. One can drive half way up, park somewhere close to the cemetery and then walk another 200m.
Access to the take off is to the right just before the arched town gate, down the stairs and gates and through some fruit trees to get to the take off. Please close the gates behind you. Take your rubbish with you. |
Flying & launching
Wind direction: SW to NW,
Wind strength: 5 - 18 kn. The take off is below the top of the hill and below the tree line and the wind strength on launch is always less than what it actually is. Best not to fly in light winds due to very short take off run. In strong cross wind the trees off to the side are causing rotor on the take off. WARNING! Beware of strong E-NE wind. The launch will be in rotor and the windsock might be showing perfect wind direction. Make sure you know the prevailing wind direction has a W component in it and it is suitable for flying. |
